Summary Background: Functional mitral regurgitation (MR) caused by reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (EF) and tethering, called ventricular functional MR (VFMR), is associated with worse outcomes. Recently, atrial functional MR (AFMR) caused by left atrial enlargement and annular dilatation has been described in patients with atrial fibrillation. However, prognosis of patients with AFMR is unclear.
Methods: To evaluate prognosis of AFMR, all-cause death and readmission for heart failure (HF) after discharge were compared among three groups (AFMR group [EF≥50% and moderate/severe MR], VFMR group [EF<50% and moderate/severe MR],and No MR group [trivial/mild MR]) in consecutive 209 hospitalized HF patients with atrial fibrillation.
Results: Shown in Figure.
Conclusions: Although AFMR was not associated with higher mortality, patients with AFMR had higher risk of morbidity, especially of readmission for HF.
