Summary In order to develop a new marker system for surgical navigation, authors examined the requirements.
The markers, named "Hybrid marker", had two functions; one was a contrast agent for MRI, the other was a
reflective ball for position measurement. The hybrid markers were planed to put between a receiver coil for
MRI and a patient. For clarifying the area to put the markers, we analyzed former62clinical data, and
fabricated a phantom to take images of MRI. In the analysis for clinical data, each area of craniotomy
approximated a simple plane. Angle between the plane and a perpendicular line was calculated. Data
showed to contain80% cases from40to69degrees, and the angle is31degrees when a tumor is located on the
parietal lobe. The phantom successfully took both T1-weighted and T2-weighted images.
