Summary The main purpose of intraoperative MRI imaging used in the operating room is to control the removal of
tumors and other lesions in solid organs. In addition, intraoperative identification of surgical complications is also a major objective, and there are many scientific reports showing the usefulness of the equipment to the physicians who use it. Since the introduction of the first MRI system in Japan in 2000, there have been 34 facilities (as of 2022) with different MRI field strengths, and the operation of these facilities, including image data registration, has not been standardized. Therefore, it is important to improve the social impact of surgical treatment through professional society-led efforts, such as training in appropriate use and the development of standards for practitioners and facilities, based on the intraoperative MRI guidelines. In addition, due to active efforts on the part of intraoperative MRI developers to have their MRIs covered by insurance, some models will be covered by insurance in 2021. At present, we are at the stage where more models and more indications are desired, and appropriate cooperation between companies and professional societies is required for the social implementation of medical devices, including insurance coverage.
