Summary I graduated from the University of Tokyo Medical School in September 1974, and my professional career was strongly influenced by my alma mater and the struggles that I faced (toudaifunsou). One month after graduation, I began working as a junior resident at the Department of Neurosurgery of the Tokyo Women's Medical University (College) (TWMU). This department was headed by Professor Kitamura, who was one of the foremost neurosurgeons in Japan. I gradually learnt neurosurgery and started my own clinical practice at TWMU. In 2001, under the guidance of Professor Takakura, who was the President of the University, I established the Faculty of Advanced Techno-surgery (FATS). This new initiative diverted my attention from main practical neurosurgerical activities to more innovative neurosurgical research, which required a lot of energy and enthusiasm. Professor Takakura constantly supported and encouraged me to attain my professional goals. Therefore, I would like to express my sincere gratitude and deep appreciation to all the clinical and scientific collaborators at TWMU. I would also like to convey my deepest appreciation to Professor Muragaki, who successfully continue our way.
