Summary Abstract: We have been proposing "therapeutic experiment" for sick animals as a novel evaluation protocol of newly
developed medical instruments and devices, which is positioned between basic research and clinical study. "Intelligent
animal operating theater" at Tokyo Women's Medical University works as a platform for the therapeutic experiment".
Day surgery will be operated there using intraoperative MR and ultrasonic images, HIFU (High Intensity Focused
Ultrasound), and navigation system. As subject animal is transported between animal hospital and the operating
theater, we have developed an intensive care unit system for animals with severe disease and/or requiring postoperative
bed rest. The system consists of cage, controller unit, and oxygen concentrator, and can control temperature, humidity,
and oxygen level. We conducted transportation simulation between animal hospital (Suginami, Tokyo) and operating
theater (Shinjuku, Tokyo). The system is put on a rented van and fixed to seats using belts. It took 40 - 45 minutes each
way. We experienced no significant difficulty in the transportation simulation. As the dimension of the vehicle and the
position of doors might limit the access to the cage, the double swing doors of the cage should be modified to another
configuration, such as removable ones.
