Summary | Pathological classification of renal cell carcinomas (RCCs) has been altered with the impact of novel facts in molecular biology. The WHO2016 classification of RCCs includes the revisions as follows; 1) multilocular cystic RCC has been changed to multilocular cystic neoplasm with low malignant potential, 2)MiT translocation RCC has been introduced encompassing Xp11.2 and 6p21 translocation cases, 3) acquired cystic disease-associated RCC has been introduced as a hemodialysis-related type, 4) several other novel types have been introduced, i.e. clear cell papillary, tubulocystic, succinate dehydrogenase-deficient, hereditary leiomyomatosis RCC-associated, 5) renal medullary carcinoma and post-neuroblastoma RCC were deleted, and 6) novel nuclear grading system based on nucleolar size is recommended to apply to clear cell and papillary RCCs. In this review, we have presented general features of pathological diagnosis of RCCs and novel histological types. |
